Mixing vessel of a stirrer comprises a double skinned pan (1,2) and connecting nozzles (6) to allow passage of a heating or cooling medium. Novelty is that the flow annulus (3) is divided by partitions (4) into vertical segments (5) each possessing two flow connections (6). Jacket segments are preferably of differing sizes to allow matching with operating volume and specific properties required by individual materials and batch sizes. USE/ADVANTAGE - Avoidance of scale up problems, which could lead to crystal deposition, baked-on solids, etc. by provision of a stepwise variable, jacketted heat transfer area.
