The drive tilts the headrest on a transverse axis on the car seat between the erected and folded positions, in both of which it is lockable. It has a pair of gears coming temporarily out of mesh during the tilting movement. A lever (17) turning with the first gear (10) has a pin (18) working in a slide (19) in the second gear (9), so that the gears remain coupled when they are not meshing. The driving gear (9) can be turned by a rack (8) actuated by the drive unit, or can be mounted on a driving shaft, and the first part of the slide can extend for a path matching that described by the pin when the gears are meshing.
