Process and appts. for automatic mfr. of a bead assembly for tyres. The appts. consists of a multi-arm carousel with rotatable drums to carry the bead and units opposite each stopping position to: (A) load the bead core (W) (B) wind on, fold and bond the filler strip (F) opt. (C) wind on, fold and bond a reinforcing strip (D) unload the bead assembly and stack between separators. a) The previously-formed metal-wire bead cores (W) are delivered singly to a conveyor where they are held magnetically and corrected to circular shape. b) The conveyor delivers the bead core to drum at position (A), where it is held by extending circular segments (10a). c) The drum moves to position (B), where an extruded rubber bead filler (F) is conveyed, cut to length and wound on drug and core (W), rotated together through clutch. The filler pref. has a projection lying on core (W) with a 'V' groove between, so that when heated bag is inflated, e.g. by air, it turns the filler (F) over against stop-ring closing the groove. Stop-ring is laterally adjustable, e.g. for different inclination. The sleeve is then pushed against the inflated bag to force the filler (F) against stop-ring and bead core (W) to bond to the latter. d) After bonding and releasing pressure, drum is turned opt. to position (C). A cut length of reinforcing strip of e.g. rubberised cotton cloth, is wound onto a drum opposite drum. The bead core (W) and filler (F) are transferred megnetically over the strip, which is shaped over both sides of the bead by heated, inflated bags. After bonding, the bead assembly is returned to drum. e) The drum turns to position (D) where is is released by segments and transferred magnetically to a storage rail where it is interleaved with separators, which are transferred by suction pad.
