Structural member has outer hollow metal section and rigid foam core with electroconducting cover layer. The core (4) is covered with a layer (7) of sacrificial metal and supported in the hollow section (3) by electrically insulating distance pieces (8). The hollow section (3) is coated internally by application of an electric voltage between the hollow section and cover layer (7). Alternatively, the core (4) has a cover (6) below the cover, layer, which is of heat expandable material, e.g. butyl rubber, and presses cover layer (7) against the hollow section (3). USE/ADVANTAGE - The invention is used in the automotive industry for crash deformable body sections with cathodic corrosion protection of internal metal surfaces.
