The sleeve has a U-section strip (2) of steel welded to a cover (3) whose height (h) equals the overall width of the U. A V-groove (5) between each end of the U and a shoulder of the base is filled with weld material. A cable comprises a core of superconducting strands (1) can be packed tightly under the cover. A channel (7) along the broad face of the base provides optional quench monitoring. ADVANTAGE - Sleeve can be mfd. easily almost any length, without risk of thermal or mechanical effect on superconductor, weld quality is easily verifiable.
