The output (2) of a laser is directed via optical elements (3a) onto a rotating polygonal mirror (3b). The beam reflected from the mirror is passed through a lens and scans the film (5) along a line (4). The transmitted light enters a slot in a tube (7) and can be internally reflected to be received by a line of photo detectors.
