Prepn. of ionically interlaced ethylene copolymers (ionomers) by extrusion comprises: 1) mixing ethylene copolymers (A) contg. 0.1-20 mol.% alpha beta- ethylenic unsatd. carboxylic acid and/or alpha,beta-ethylenic unsatd. carboxyl gp.-contg. comonomers with metal cpds. and opt. solvents in an extruder mixing zone at a temp. greater than the m.pt. of (A); 2) reacting (A) and metal cpds. in extruder reaction zone; and 3) degassing resulting ionomers in the extruder degassing zone, whereby one or more degassing agent (B) is added to the ionomer melt in step (3). USE/ADVANTAGE - Use of ionomers in the prepn. of adhesive agents, injection-moulded articles, protective foils amd food packagings is claimed.
