The ignition has an ignition module (6) to supply the ignition coil with current of given amplitude, in response to a control current (J1) supplied to the input stage (5) of the ignition module (6), via a control device (1). The amplitude of the control current (J1) is switched between at least 2 values and is used to control an end stage transistor (T3) within the ignition module (6). The end stage transistor pref. acts as part of a current reflector for converting the control current (J1) into a control voltage (U2). ADVANTAGE - Reduction of ignition energy w.r.t. engine operating parameters without additional wiring.
