The box (1) comprises a bottom (2) to which vertical sides (3, 4) are hinged (10, 11), each side having angled returns (12, 13) at the top to form the lid. The two returns (12, 13) meet together in the middle of the box and are held by a catch (14). The box contains a plastics bag filled with fire extinguishing liquid, and is orientated so that one vertical side (3) is at right angles to the probable path of an explosion shock wave. USE/ADVANTAGE - Fire and explosion suppression in coal mine. Shock wave striking the vertical side causes it to swing inwards releasing the catch so that the opposite side collapses and the plastics bag bursts open.
