Container re-filling code marking device - detects previously marked container code for positioning container relative to marking device to prevent codes overlapping

The code marking device includes a feed mechanism (10,14,16) for the containers (12) to be marked. The existing container code is detected and aligned with a marking device (112) for the re-filling code, which marks the container (12) so that the two codes are non-overlapping. Pref. the containers (12) are positioned via a friction grip which engages the inside surface of the container, to allow it to be rotated into the required marking position. Pref. a laser marking device (112) has a laser light source, and a focal lens system providing a narrow collimated beam. A number of movable mirrors direct the laser beam onto the container surface. ADVANTAGE - Ensures readability of each successive re-filling code marked on container, e.g. recycled bottle.
