The method involves using a gas conducting element, container or sensor whose dimensions in at least one direction transverse to the gas conduction direction lies in the range of the mean gas particle free path length and whose dimension in the gas conduction direction is a multiple thereof. The dimensions are such that gas particle transport is mainly by interaction with the walls and not with each other. USE/ADVANTAGE - For extending the time constants of desorption of gas particles from surfaces, e.g. in gas measurement systems eg in determination of gas concentration etc. The negative effects of slow desorption are eliminated.
