Magnetic tape recording assembly with erase head - has magnetic core with gap region coated to provide peak strength field flanked by null regions

A magnetic erase head is mounted on a rotating drum to erase information of angled tracks on the tape. The head has a core of ferrite with a central gap (34). The length of the gap is 3 microns and has a gap surface coating (32) of an Fe-A1-Si alloy such that the saturation flux density is greater than that of the core. The magnetically coated tape moves across the surface and the erase field has a maximum over the gap region with null values on either side. ADVANTAGE - High efficiency erasing avoiding residual magnetism causing talk over without increasing power required.
