Degradable, pref. biodegradable open pore dimensionally stable moulding - obtd. from degradable thermoplastics material and soluble crystals and use e.g. for filter, catalyst support, storage medium or insulation
Open-pore dimensionally stable moulding (I), esp. for filter for filtering liquids or gases, catalyst support, storage medium, e.g. for liquids or insualtion, is degradable, esp. biologically degradable, e.g. by microbes, and its particles can be sepd. by auto-sepn. (I) is produed from poly-beta-hydroxybutyrate (II), a copolymer of butyric acid and a valerate, cellulose acetate or a biodegradable or water-soluble cellulose, lactic acid or glycol cpd. or polyerised glycollic acid. (I) is concave porous, pref. with a pore size of 20-60 microns, and may be mixed with aligned reinforcement. The starting material consists of a homogeneous mixt. of soluble crystals (III), pref. with a dia. of 20-60 microns, esp. water-soluble salt or glucose crystals, and a thermoplastic and degradable plastics material (IV), in granular or powder form. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) is used for making a filter membrane for filtering the air supply to the passenger compartment of vehicles; a carrier for nutrients or medicaments; or lightweight structural material (claimed), e.g. for tableware, packaging material, ascoustic insulation, household articles or boxes. It is completely degradable in a few days or weeks, esp. in less than 10 weeks (claimed) and any particles or catalyst in (I) can be sepd. in an environmentally friendly way and opt. re-used.
