The magnetic disc storage system has a number of discs that are simultaneously accessed by heads (12) inserted radially. A direct drive (25) rotates the discs while the heads are moved (26) by commands from a controller. The heads are coupled to a circuit (30) that provides processing of data for reading and coating operations. The signal form of signals read from the disc is controlled by a filter (18) that can be adjusted by a generated signal. The optimum form of the signals is determined by a process that involves an initial reading of the data stored on the disc at the beginning of use.
