The hydrodynamic retarder has a drive shaft to which is attached a profiled scoop wheel rotor (2) which rotates in close proximity to a fixed stator (3) having scoop chambers similar to the rotor (2). The rotor (2) and stator (3) are enclosed by a housing (4) and the scoops together make up a toroidal torque-dissipating space (10). An additional unit supplies hydraulic fluid for torque control to the space (10) via the inlet ports (5,6) and the slots (8) in the rotor (2) and the fluid is vented after retardation at the outlet port (7) via the slots (9) augmented by the slots (11) in the stator periphery. USE/ADVANTAGE - Ensures rapid venting of torque chambers when disengaged with minimal residual drag due to air turbulence/unexpelled fluid. High speed running when disengaged does not produce excessive temp. rise due to optimal profiling of scoops.
