A conventional machine tool, such as a lathe that is manually operated, is retrofitted with equipment to provide a CNC mode of operation. For manual operation, the cross slide (3) of the machine is moved transversely by a handwheel (c) that is turned to transmit motion via a leadscrew. The ends of the leadscrew are supported in bearings and for retrofitting the end is adapted to receive input from a motor (7). The motor is connected using a coupling and can receive commands from a drive circuit coupled to an electronic CNC controller. ADVANTAGE - Cost effective retrofitting of CNC control.
