An adsorbent in granular or lump form is introduced into a reaction chamber (14) and taken out of it through a grid of channels formed by a multiplicity of separate feed and discharge hoppers (18 and 20). Most of the waste gas is fed into the reaction chamber from one side, so that it spreads out over the whole of that side of the chamber, while a small proportion is fed in through the bulk material distributor cone (17).
