The invention relates to a method for sorting refuse and a device operating in such a manner that the wastes supplied in a continuous conveyed stream are exposed to the circumferential surface (7), partly acted on by suction air, of an essentially horizontally mounted rotating screening drum (1) and, owing to their differing weight, are separated out of the conveyed stream, partly adhering to the circumferential surface (7). The object is for said method and device, with low constructional outlay, to conform to practice insofar as the conveyed stream containing the unsorted wastes passes, at an end face (2) of the rotating screening drum (1), into the inner chamber (4) thereof and migrates through the latter at low velocity on the drum bottom (5), as far as the other end face (6) of the screening drum (1), a proportion of the wastes being carried along on the inside of the circumferential surface (7) which, in its upwardly rotating region, is subject to the action of suction air (8) from the outside, as far as the apex of the screening drum (8), to fall down there at the end of the suction air region onto a conveying means (10) which extends within the screening drum and conveys out the wastes in the axial direction thereof, whereas the waste proportions which at first remain on the drum bottom leave the screening drum at the discharge side under the effect of gravity.
