The surface to be planted, such as the base of a plant pot or window box, is lined with a sponge-like water- absorbent storage medium and then covered with soil before inserting the plants. The storage medium can be a plate, mat or web of foam rubber or comparable absorbent foam plastics set underneath the soil layer. Multi-layered mats can be used with each layer having a different water dispensing capacity. The mats can be made from recycled synthetic waste. The mat should be bent round and up at the edges.
