The subject of the present invention is processes and colorimetric reagents which make it possible to quantitatively detect pathogenic bacteria in water. A colorimetric reagent according to the invention is an aqueous solution containing, per litre of solution, the following products: - sulphanilic acid between 0.1 and 1.5 g; - N-(1-naphthyl)ethylenediamine dihydrochloride between 0.1 and 1.5 g; - methylene blue between 0.001 and 0.15 g; - mercury(II) nitrate between 5 g and 20 g; - tartaric acid between 0.05 and 0.25 g; - acetic acid between 1 and 5 g. One application is the rapid determination of the order of magnitude to within a power of ten, of the quantity of pathogenic bacteria contained in the unit volume of a water sample.
