The signals are transmitted on a transmission channel (18) between at least one transmission coder (13...22) and a reception decoder linked to a receiver. The coding consists in cutting up into subbands, according to the same tree structure by filtering and decimation, the full-band image to be transmitted, in order independently to code the subband signals obtained. The decoding consists in decoding the received signals of each subband as a function of their resolution and of that specific to the receiver. The method consists mainly: in carrying out, at the level of the transmission coder, an inter-image coding (13...22) compensated in movement in each of the subbands, on the basis of the movement vectors estimated on the non-decomposed image, and reset to scale on the basis of the rate of sub-sampling of the band in question, and in carrying out, in each subband when the vector movement does not correspond to a whole number of pixels, an interpolation calculation for the corresponding pixel, taking account not only of the signal received in the subband itself but also of the signals received simultaneously in the other subbands.
