A method of autoregressive detection of a complex sinusoidal signal in noise and for estimating its frequency involves performing an autoregressive analysis of the signal to determine first order reflection coefficients. A fixed or computed noise reference is defined. The reflection coefficients are compared with the noise reference to detect the presence of the sinusoidal signal. The argument of the reflection coefficient is computed to derive the frequency of the sinusoidal signal. For autoregressive analysis the signal is filtered so as to produce essentially white noise.
