The process for automatic characterisation of the seabed performs a structural analysis of video image sequences of the bed so as to determine to which predetermined types of images the video images belong, - by preprocessing (1) the numerical values of brightness; - detecting structures (2) defined by lines projecting from the bed, by detecting and shrinking the contours; - modelling (3) the detected contours by model segments; - and characterising (4) the images by tests on parameters picked from the number, the length, the distribution of lengths and the orientations of the segments modelling the contours.
