Device for transmitting and/or storing signals representing a texture which are available in the form of digital signals corresponding to the brightness of the points of an image, comprising a circuit for extraction of a reference sample which is representative of the texture to be transmitted and/or stored, and circuits for coding, on the one hand, signals corresponding to the entire region from which the sample has been extracted and, on the other hand, output signals of the said sample signals extraction circuit, then, after transmission and/or storage of the coded output signals from the said coding circuits, circuits for decoding of the coded sample signals and of the coded region signals, provided in parallel at the output of the said means and, at the output of the said decoding circuits, a texture synthesis device itself comprising a circuit for compiling a dictionary on the basis of blocks of the sample, and a circuit for decoration of the region signals with the aid of the output signals from the said dictionary-compiling circuit.
