The present invention relates to a method for determining the water permeability of a porous material not saturated with water. This method consists: - in preparing a sample of the material having a constant cross-sectional area - in covering both faces of the sample with a semipermeable membrane, - in uniformly spreading two solutions with different concentrations, and therefore different osmotic potentials, on the surface of each of the two membranes, - in measuring the quantities of water exchanged over time until establishment of a steady state and in deducing the permeability of the said material from the constant flow rate obtained at this time. The invention also relates to a device for implementing the said method.
