The instrument has a lateral branch (8) with a non-return valve (7) at its proximal end, and a tubular body (6) defining a supply conduit. A catheter (3) may be inserted into a blood vessel via the conduit, which includes an enlarged portion (10) whose internal wall defines a cavity (11) connected to a catheter insertion portion. A number of blood entry openings (12) are formed at regular longitudinal and circumferential intervals in the walls of the enlarged portion of the conduit, over a length corresponding to a distal part of the cavity. The openings may typically be arranged over a length approx. 1/3 of that of the conduit. ADVANTAGE - Minimal interference with normal blood flow during insertion operation.
