Measurement system for variations in parameters characteristic of a medium, particularly water, consists of: (a) a measurement unit (1) providing results (b) local treatment unit (2) for results (c) communication unit (3) for transmission of results. The measurement unit (1) has the means of determining a parameter related to the variation in carbon dioxide level such as a colorimetric reagent contained in a cell with at least one permeable of semipermeable wall. The treatment unit (2) has the means of collection and storage or results in digital form. A control station (4) is connected at set times to the communication unit (3) and the means of storage of results. The control station may be connected to an orbiting satellite(S) or be remote and physically connected to storage means. The control station monitors other parameters to determine the flow of carbon dioxide across interface between one medium and another. The measurement unit (1) has the means, e.g. temperature monitor (7) and fluorimeter (8), of monitoring additional parameters and the treatment unit (2) takes account of these in the determination of the significant parameter.
