The pot containing the plant is fused to the secondary pot, which serves as a reservoir for the water. The earthenware pots are produced in a porous biscuit material, with the external surface enamelled to retain the water. Passage of water from the reserve to the growing pot is achieved by the natural porosity of the earthenware material. The contact surface (Sc) between the growing pot and the reserve pot is relatively small and serves to control the humidity level of the soil in the growing pot. Flow between the two pots is achieved by two mechanisms, hydrostatic pressure and capillary action. The height of the water in the reserve pot also serves to provide closer control the flow rate to the growing pot. USE/ADVANTAGE - It ensures an adequate flow of water to the growing pot, for long periods and thus reduces the need for repeated watering.
