A child resistant matchbox container comprises a housing (1) whose interior shape corresponds generally with the exterior shape of a matchbox receivable therein and which has respective pairs of opposed major and minor sides and a pair of opposed ends. At least one of the sides has an aperture (3) which, in use of the container, lies in register with a striking surface of a matchbox received in the housing (1) and at least one of the pair of opposed ends of the housing (1) is openable and closable by means of a child resistant closure (4, 5).
