The device for measuring the diameter of the pupil comprises a scleral contact ions supporting on the eye an optical system for spectrophotometric analysis of the retina using an array of emitters 21 for directing light to the eye via a mirror 20 and an array of light receivers 20 for receiving light from the iris at different distances from a central axis. The emitters and receivers may be diodes or the ends of fibres in an optical cable 18. A further optical system comprising a central light emitter and receiver e.g. an LED and photo detector, or an optical fibre 10 may be supported on the lens. Further sensing devices may also be provided on the lens e.g. EMG electrodes, temperature sensors, and fluid flow and pressure sensors may be connected to ducts in the ions. IMAGE
