PURPOSE:To enable the automatic insertion of lead wires high in quality and density by a method wherein the shoulder of a lead wire which is fixed first is brought into close contact with a board. CONSTITUTION:An inserting guide 5 is kept in such a state that its underside bears against the upside of a board 2. Lead wires 1a and 1b of en electronic component 1, which are inserted first, are guided along a longitudinal groove 6 and inserted into holes 3b and 3c by a push rod 4. After the component 1 is in contact with the surface of the board 2, when the push rod 4 is further pushed down, the shoulders of the lead wires 1a and 1b are bent and the parts of the shoulders as wide as the push rod 4 are brought into contact with the surface of the board 2, and the component is fixed. Then, the lead wires 1a and 1b protruding from the rear of the board 2 are cut off in a certain length and clinched making them bend inward. Next, the guide 5 is set to holes 3b and 3a. At this point, the underside of the guide 5 bears on the lead wire 1a inserted into the hole 3b but a lateral groove 7 whose width is nearly equal to the diameter X of the lead wire 1a is provided to the underside of the guide 5, so that the guide 5 is prevented from pushing the lead wire 1a strongly.
