PURPOSE:To apply stress to a sample and to easily replace the sample after its breakage by providing a sample holder above a hermetically closed low temp. container in a state cable of being inserted in and detached from the container and connecting the hollow cylinder and stress shaft of the sample holder to a stress loading mechanism. CONSTITUTION:A sample 10 whose material characteristics must be investigated at low temp. is fixed between the chucks 14, 15 provided to the hollow cylinder 12 and stress shaft 13 of a sample holder 11 at both ends thereof and inserted in a hermetically closed low temp. container 3 and the surface of the sample 10 is scanned at high speed by an acoustic probe 30 while stress is applied across the hollow cylinder 12 and the stress shaft 13 by a stress loading mechanism 17 to be rapidly formed into an image. After the sample 10 is broken, the sample is pulled out of the hermetically closed low temp. container 3 along with the holder 11 and replaced with a new sample 10 to again insert the new one in the container 3. By this method, stress can be applied to the sample and the sample after its breakage can be easily replaced.
