PURPOSE:To increase possibility for an encounter to a nest that can be solved just with a single scan by repeating the scans alternately in forward and reverse directions for solution of the nest. CONSTITUTION:A length decision processing part 2 scans the processing data memory part 1 in the reverse or forward direction to extract successively such elements that have their uncertain locations owing to data elements of nested structures. Then the ''length'', i.e., the difference between locations of nests is obtained as long as the solution is possible. This length is written on the length area of the part 1. A forward or reverse scan is decided by an indication of a control part 3. The part 2 gives information to the part 3 every time a scan is through. For a data string having a nested structure as shown in the figure, the nests at locations (7), (5) and (3) are solved in the reverse direction in the 1st time. The nest of a location (6) is solved by the forward scan in the 2nd time, and the nests at locations (4), (2) and (1) are solved in the reverse direction again in the 3rd time. Thus all locations are fixed.
