PURPOSE: To distinguish a rough road section with high accuracy without spending much additional cost on hardware and software by sensing the trigger characteristic amount representing the acceleration of one wheel, and distinguishing the rough road when the absolute of the sensed value exceeds a specified limit. ;CONSTITUTION: A trigger characteristic amount BE to represent the acceleration of at least one wheel of a car is sensed, and if the absolute value of the obtained characteristic amount exceeds the specified limit value GW, it is judged that the applicable road surface is poorly conditioned. The trigger characteristic amount depends on at least two segment periods Tn, which represents the time the wheel needs to make sweep and sensing of the installed angle segment. As trigger characteristic amount, the absolute value of difference DTN between successive segment periods is used. The trigger characteristics are determined by forming the absolute of the difference DTN between successive segment periods and making an addition SDTN for a certain number of segments.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1994,JPO
