PURPOSE: To simplify a polarization control system by providing a 2nd optical detector for absorbing a crossing-directional electric component of light which is hardly absorbed by a 1st optical detector. CONSTITUTION: This receiver has a 1st optical detector 10, having completely dichroic waveguide structure that preferentially absorbs the crossing-directional magnetic component of an incident light 16 and a 2nd optical detector 22, which is identical with the optical detector 10 and arranged right behind the optical detector 10, so as to secure the optical coupling of multilayered strips. Those two optical detectors 10 and 22 are hybrid circuits, and the multilayered surface of the optical detector 22 crosses the multilayered surface of the optical detector 10 at right angles. Therefore, the crossing-directional electric component TE of the incident light 16, which is perpendicular to the TM and exits from the optical detector 10 becomes perpendicular to the multilayered surface of the optical detector 22 and is preferentially absorbed by the optical detector 22. Consequently, the polarization control system can be simplified, which is used for a coherent communication system.
