PURPOSE:To prevent a polymer from being shaved-off in weaving a screen gauze, by a method wherein a fabric woven from polyester monofilaments comprising ethylene terephthalate units in not less than a specified proportion is subjected to a weight- reducing treatment by using a solvent comprising sodium hydroxide as a main constituent and capable of dissolving the polyester, and then the fabric is washed with water. CONSTITUTION:A fabric woven from polyester monofilaments comprising at least 80mol% ethylene terephthalate units is subjected to a weight-reducing treatment by using a solvent comprising sodium hydroxide as a main constituent and capable of dissolving the polyester, and then the fabric is washed with eater. The weight-reducing treatment, which is carried out by a method by which scum can be removed, may be carried out by a method of heating an aqueous 2-10% solution of sodium hydroxide to or above 50 deg.C and immersing a woven screen guaze in the solution, or by a method of applying an aqueous 20-30% solution of sodium hydroxide to the woven screen gauze and leaving the gauze to stand at room temperature for a long time, or leaving the gauze to stand for a short time and then blowing a stream thereto. After the weight-reducing treatment is finished, the fabric is immediately washed sufficiently with water or hot water to wash away the alkali component or scum adhered to the fabric.
