PURPOSE: To provide a cladding material for a fuel rod used for a nuclear reactor which is cooled and modulated by water. CONSTITUTION: A nuclear fuel rod is composed of an inner part of Zircaloy 4 and an outer part of an alloy of zirconium base, the outer layer includes 0.35%-0.65% of tin, 0.18%-0.25% of iron, 0.07%-0.13% of chrome, and 0.19%-0.23% of oxygen in weight% except the zirconium and inevitable impurities, and the total of the content of the iron, chrome, tin, and oxygen is 1.26% in weight or less. The 0.80%-1.20% of niobium and 0.10%-0.16% of oxygen in weight can be contained as an alternative or an additional means. The thickness of the outer layer is 10%-25% of the whole thickness of the cladding material. As an alternate change, the iron, chrome, and niobium till 0.5% may be substituted for vanadium of an equivalent quantity.
