PURPOSE:To ignite the slurry without using kerosine by spraying a super-finely crushed coal-water slurry of the ash content of 10% or less, the viscosity thereof being less than a specific value measured by the Haake method and using an ultrahigh energy ignition plug. CONSTITUTION:By using a quality improved and ultra-high energy ignition plug of coal-water slurry (CWM) properties an igniter firing the CWM having a stable ignitability which is equal to that of kerosine can be used. The properties of the CWM are set such that the ash content is 10% or less, the quantity of heat generated of CWM is made high and the flame temperature is maintained at a high value. The particle size of CWM is set at 200 mesh pass of 80-90%, 1mu pass of 10% or more, and the diameter of atoms is made small to secure a stable ignitability and a flame stability. Next, the proper viscosity of CWM is regulated to improve the atomizing characteristic of CWM is improved. Further, combustion air enriched with oxygen (oxygen concentration in air: 25-80%) is supplied to the CWM. By these procedures, it is possible to secure an ignition stability which is equal to that of kerosine without using kerosine.
