PURPOSE:To obtain an optical fiber having a core made of a polymer consisting essentially of methyl methacrylate or styrene by charging continuously a monomer to a polymerizing device after subjecting the monomer to a stage for distilling the same in the presence of oxygen partial pressure followed by removing the dissolved oxygen in the fraction. CONSTITUTION:The monomer is refined by distilling the same in the presence of oxygen, then removing the dissolved oxygen. The presence of an extremely slight amt. of monomer peroxide is permitted and in turn the absolute stability of the production process is attained. The blocking trouble occuring in the polymn. does not arise even without adding a polymn. inhibitor thereto if the presence of oxygen increases. The effective method of removing the dissolved oxygen is to treat a gas contg. oxygen at a low rate and contg. little dust, for example, gaseous nitrogen contg. =0.1ppm oxygen by a polyacrylonitrile ultrafilter membrane having the filtration performance capable of separating =90% human albumin to remove the dust therefrom, then bringing such gas into counter current contact with the monomer in a gas-liquid contact column. The dissolved oxygen in the solvent soln. of a plymn. initiator and chain transfer agent is removed by the method similar to the disoxidizing method of the monomer.
