PURPOSE:To obtain a good-quality single crystal having arbitrary size by lowering the temperature of melt containing bismuth oxide, strontium oxide, calcium oxide and copper oxide in a prescribed ratio and crystallizing Bi2(Sr, Ca)3Cu2O8 on a seed crystal brought into contact with the melt. CONSTITUTION:33-37.9% bismuth oxide is mixed with 33.7-40.5% mixture of strontium oxide and calcium oxide and 33.7-40.5% copper oxide. This mixture is uniformly melted by heating and then, the temperature is lowered. In this time, the melt is brought into contact with the seed crystal to deposit Bi2(Sr, Ca)3Cu2O8 crystal on the seed crystal and this crystal is pulled up while growing to provide the objective large-sized single crystal having good purity.
