PROCESS FOR CONTROLLED DECOMPOSITION OF DINITROGEN OXIDE IN GAS STREAM CONTAINING DINITROGEN OXIDE

PURPOSE: To decompose dinitrogen oxide while avoiding any trouble accompanied by generation of heat by controlling the exothermic property of the reaction such that the temp. in the decomposition zone is maintained below a preset maximal value. ;CONSTITUTION: An N₂O contg. gas stream is supplied in a catalytic N₂O decomposition zone having the preset allowable maximal temp. T_max, wherein N₂O is decomposed into nitrogen and oxygen under N₂O decomposition conditions. Thereafter, a part 28 of an effluent gas stream 20 therefrom is cooled to make a cooled effluent gas stream 50. A part 55 of the cooled effluent gas stream 50 is refluxed in order to maintain all temperatures in the N₂O decomposition zone 14 at below T_max. Thus, temperatures of the catalyst and the catalytic bed can be maintained low, so that the process is proceeded with a high activity for a long life.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1994,JPO
