PURPOSE: To control a bulk flow without depending on the chemical environment of a system by applying a voltage between the inlet port and outlet port of a capillary tube, and generating a pressure difference by an air pump. ;CONSTITUTION: A power source 30 and a power source 34 apply different voltages to a sample vial 22 and a buffer solution storage vial 24, respectively. The power source outputs are set by voltage regulating vials 42, 44, respectively. The potential difference is determined depending on the voltage of the vial 42. The vials 42, 44 are connected to air pumps 56, 66, respectively, to impart pressure, vacuum or atmospheric pressure to one end of a capillary tube 12. The pressure difference is intentionally generated in such a manner as to be controllable. Since the height equivalent to one theoretical plate is not so much increased with a pressure difference of a level of 20cm, the pressure difference can be employed to increase the speed. The control of the pressure does not depend on voltage nor chemistry. By utilizing the pressure difference together with electrcosmotic current, the average speed of a bulk flow allowing a sharp flow front can be provided.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1994,JPO
