PURPOSE: To allow pluralities of user terminals to access one remote terminal by sending a polling signal to each user terminal from the remote terminal at a polling speed assigned to each user and allowing each user terminal receiving the signal to make acknowledgement in an acknowledgement size not larger than an assigned acknowledgement size. ;CONSTITUTION: An optical fiber trunk 106 from a hub 104a is extended and terminated by an optical node 108. Each user terminal 202 is connected to six tree-structured lines distributed from the optical node 108. The hub 104a assigns a communication parameter to each terminal 202. The hub 104a makes scheduling so that an idle time caused when a user terminal receives a poll and makes an acknowledgement is minimized. Thus, each pole acknowledgement from each user is delayed for a prescribed period so as to avoid the acknowledgement signals from being overlapped. The delay time is decided based on a known maximum round propagation delay and a maximum acknowledgement size assigned to each user.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1994,JPO
