NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I [X and Y are pair of -CN and -COOR (R is H or alkyl), -CN and -CN, -CN and phenyl and H and formula III]. EXAMPLE:The compound expressed by formula III. USE:A fluorescent substance having hydrophobic group and hydrophilic group or asymmetric and rigid photoreaction agent having photoreactivity in the crystal and solution state, utilizable for Langmuir-Blodgett membranes utilizing the photoreactivity of accumulated membranes or introducible into polymer side chains as photosensitive units and useful as a photoreactive rigid fluorescent substance for analysis, measurement and reagent. PREPARATION:A compound expressed by formula IV is reacted with a compound expressed by formula V in the presence of a condensing agent, e.g. acetic acid-acetic anhydride, to give 4-[2-(4-formylphenyl)ethenyl]pyridine expressed by formula VI, which is then reacted with a compound expressed by formula VII in a solvent in the presence of a base, e.g. KOH, as necessary, to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula I.
