PURPOSE: To obtain a new optically active compound having excellent physical and chemical stabilities, large spontaneous polarization tendency and low viscosity, stably exhibiting chiral smectic C phase and useful as a light-modulator, etc., for a liquid crystal display, etc. ;CONSTITUTION: The optically active compound of formula I [R¹ and R² are 1-14C alkyl; Q¹ and Q² are single bond, ether bond or (thio)carboxylic acid ester bond; Z is (thio)carboxylic acid ester bond; M is group of formula II or formula III [X and Y are single bond, (thio)carboxylic acid ester bond, methyleneoxy bond, etc.; rings A, B and C are group of formula IV, formula V, formula VI or formula VIII], e.g. (3R,2S)-3-methoxy-2-methyl-4,4,4- trifluorobutanoic acid 4-[4'-(4-octyloxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl]biphenylyl ester.
