PURPOSE: To judge whether the testing data written on a track can be identified and read out of noise data or not, no matter how largely a magnetic head is off-tracked. ;CONSTITUTION: A magnetic head 4 is intentionally off-tracked into regions 3b and 3b' on both sides neighboring a track 3a of a magnetic disk 3. Noise data Dn and Dn' are written. Then, the magnetic head 4 is returned to the track 3a, and testing data D are written. Thereafter, the magnetic head 4 is moved into the off-track directions from the track 3a, and the testing data D written in the track 3a are read out. The limit positions of the off-tracks on both sides of the track 3a, where the testing data D can be identified from the noise data Dn and Dn', are detected.
