PROPHYLACTIC AND THERAPEUTIC COMPOSITION FOR CLOSTRIDIUM DIFFICILE DIARRHEA AND PSEUDOMEMBRANOUS COLITIS

PURPOSE:To provide the subject composition which is composed of cell bodies or blasts of Lactobacillus and saccharides, thus useful as a prophylactic and therapeutic agent for Clostridium difficile diarrhea and pseudomembranous colitis with extremely reduced toxicity. CONSTITUTION:The objective composition comprises the cell bodies or blasts of a lactobacillus, suitably Clostridium butyricum MIYAIRI 588 (FERM No. 2789) and a saccharide such as starch or raffinose. The amount of the saccharide is preferably 1mg/10g per 108 CFU of the cell bodies or the blasts. The composition is given in an amount corresponding to 106 to 109 CFU as the cell bodies or blasts of the lactobacillus per kg human body weight. The spore is obtained by anaerobic proliferation of the lactobacillus in a medium of usual bouillon containing 2% corn starch.
