Waste (a) is charged to a pyrolysis drum (2). The carbonisation gas (s) generated therein is passed into a combustion chamber (8). The flue gas (r) formed therein is fed via a cooling device (10) and via a gas compressor (16) to a stack (20). By means of a control system (24, 70), the speed of rotation (nI) of the gas compressor (16) is controlled as a function of the pressure (p) in the gas path between the pyrolysis drum (2) and the gas compressor (16) in such a way that the speed of rotation (ni) is reduced when the pressure (p) is reduced. Preferably, a further gas compressor (54), whose speed of rotation (nII) is controlled correspondingly, is connected in series with the gas compressor (16).
