The method according to the invention comprises the following successive process steps: - drying of the mud; - addition of a base to the mud and then mixing of the mud with base until a virtually homogeneous blend has been achieved; - roasting of the blend at about 600 degree C for at least 20 min; - dissolution of the blend in water and passing this through a filtration unit to filter off metal hydroxide; - crystallization of chromate.
