The contactor has a body of electrically conductive material, and has a primary part (11) with a large dia., and a sec. part (12) with a smaller dia. and transversed by a channel (13). The channel issues into a recess (17) with a larger dia. than itself. A fibre component (14) is assembled in the channel at the end of the contactor which is to be coupled to a corresp. female contact unit. The fibre component is squarely cut at both ends to minimise losses when light passes in and out of it. Its outer end surface (15) is arranged at the same height as the mouth of the channel. The inner end surface (16) of the fibre component is arranged inside the channel approximately in the centre of the body sec. part. The fibre component is firmly anchored in the body with the aid of e.g. epoxy adhesive. The outer end of the fibre component is polished finally to form the contactor (1) for incorporation in a field.
